Reflection on Social Media Case 11: OK Go Gravity Song

Ok Go is an amazing band. They make incredible music videos, and Upside Down & Inside Out is no exception! The band takes us in an airplane for this video to show us some real-life zero gravity action!
It turns out this video has a little social media history behind it.
But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. OK Go were having some success as a band before they started posting their awesome music videos, but they really became well-known with the viral success of their low-budget YouTube video, Here it Goes Again, which features the band doing some incredible treadmill moves!
It didn’t take long for them to find this social media video niche was a perfect fit for them. They kept uploading their popular videos to YouTube and the masses kept watching them.
In 2016, Ok Go worked with S7 Airlines to produce Upside Down & Inside Out. According to this article, Ok Go wanted to make the video a Facebook premier, where it was shown only on Facebook for 48 hours. There are rumors that this had to do with YouTube’s changing policies, but Ok Go has skirted the issue all together.
The day before the video was supposed to go live on Facebook, S7 posted the video on their YouTube channel, even though they had agreed not to use the video without OK Go’s permission. It didn’t take long before the video was taken down due to a copyright claim.
It also didn’t take long for Ok Go to put the video on their YouTube channel, and that is where you will most likely find the video today.
So what do we learn from this, my friends? We learn that you can’t trust anybody when it comes to social media. There is always someone who wants to use your information and content to make money.
Most of us just don’t care because our content is not that amazing. With Facebook in the news these days over Cambridge Analytica, we might start caring about the information we share.

  1. Erica, great post and summary! I think you make a good point that you can't trust anyone with social media. It is way too easy to abuse and take advantage of.
